1. Call for Golden STAR Award Nominations
On May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah, the “golden spike” was driven into the final tie that joined 1,776 miles of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, ceremonially creating the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. To commemorate that auspicious occasion, Amtrak created “National Train Day.†This year, the fourth annual National Train Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
As part of the celebration, representatives from Amtrak, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority and Caltrans created California’s Golden STAR (STate Advocate of Rail) award to honor passenger rail advocates from California and help build awareness about National Train Day throughout the state. Former honorees include Doras Briggs (2008), Art Lloyd (2009) and Art Brown (2010). The award will be presented at one of the Northern California (place to be announced) National Train Day events on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
We invite you to submit a nominee for this prestigious honor.
The deadline for submission is April 1, 2011.
