Wi-Fi Trial on Capitol Corridor trains ends 12/31
**********************************************************************
After a very informative and successful trial with Hobnob, December’s
free wireless internet on trains 523 and 542 will end on December 31
with 523’s run to San Jose. (Train 542 will not have Wi-Fi on
December 31, 2008)
CCJPA and Hobnob each learned valuable information about Capitol
Corridor passenger use. Collectively, much more bandwidth was
utilized than had been anticipated. CCJPA will take these lessons to
heart and is already using the data to design a network to be deployed
on all trains that can provide a complimentary/free wireless internet
connection with sufficient bandwidth and other network characteristics
to provide a good experience to train riders.
CCJPA plans to obtain such a network over the course of 2009 and it
will likely be rolled out in stages. Of course, with recent State
budget issues putting a temporary hold on some sources of funding,
coupled with initiatives at the Federal level to develop projects that
create jobs and have positive environmental/energy effects, the
funding for building such a network is in flux. CCJPA will continue to
work through the timing issues involved with these funding changes and
will even explore financing a network, if required.
In January, CCJPA plans to conduct surveys on board trains 523 and 542
to ask follow-up questions about the experience of those who utilized
the network during December 2008.
